Chen made the remarks during an interview in Taipei City with Niharika Mandhana for an article published March 22 in The Wall Street Journal.
According to Chen, the U.S. has adopted a strategy of saying less and doing more in the Indo-Pacific. He emphasized that U.S. support for Taiwan is ongoing and real, adding that the U.S. continues to back Taiwan with concrete actions while avoiding escalating regional tensions.
In addition to noting that Taiwan and the U.S. share strategic interests, Chen said Taiwan is enhancing its deterrence capabilities and expanding cooperation with like-minded partners. The first island chain is gradually transforming from a geographical concept into a framework for security cooperation, he said, adding that growing links between Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines and other countries highlight how difficult it would be for any country to remain uninvolved in a crisis in the region.
Chen said that the U.S. National Security Strategy prioritizes deterrence in the Taiwan Strait, underscoring Taiwan’s importance in the U.S. government’s global approach. He added that Taiwan will continue strengthening its capabilities and deepening international collaboration, echoing the principle of shared responsibility emphasized by the U.S. (YCH-E)
