Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Chen Ming-chi hosted a luncheon for a trade delegation led by San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones March 18 in Taipei City to exchange views on expanding bilateral cooperation.
Chen said Texas is a key base for local firms seeking to expand to the U.S. given the state’s great investment environment. The State of Texas Taiwan Office set up by Gov. Greg Abbott during his 2024 visit reflects the increasingly close trade and investment ties, he added.
The deputy minister said Taiwan possesses strong advantages in the semiconductor and artificial intelligence sectors and plays an indispensable role in the democratic supply chain and global innovation. He added that he hopes to see Taiwan enhance strategic partnership with the U.S. city, which is also home to the Texas Cyber Command, in investment promotion, industrial exchanges and talent cultivation.
In response, Jones, who is visiting Taiwan for the first time, said San Antonio is the sixth largest U.S. city and shares industrial development objectives with the Five Trusted Industry Sectors initiative unveiled by President Lai Ching-te.
She also commended Taiwan for its open and free press and robust democratic institutions and anticipated deepening relations with Taiwan in technological innovation, industry development and talent exchanges. (SFC-E)
