HomeUpdatesDeputy FM welcomes Guatemalan delegation
Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi hosted a reception for a five-member delegation from ally, Guatemala, led by José Fernando Suriano, deputy transportation minister, March 16 in Taipei City. Chen encouraged domestic electric vehicles manufacturers to invest in Guatemala for mutual development and prosperity.

The delegation included José Enrique Arredondo, mayor of Nueva Santa Rosa City, who is attending the 2026 Smart City Summit and Expo as well as the Net Zero City Expo, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The deputy FM said that Taiwan and Guatemala have enjoyed a deep bond for almost 92 years and added that bilateral cooperation has yielded results in economy, trade and transportation infrastructure, citing the Guatemala City-based La Aurora International Airport in 2024. In addition, Guatemala is Taiwan’s fourth largest supplier of coffee beans, Chen noted.

The deputy FM expressed gratitude to the Guatemalan government for its long-standing support for Taiwan’s international participation, including Suriano’s speech supporting Taiwan during the 2025 International Civil Aviation Organization annual assembly.

Suriano noted that one goal of the visit was to gain insight into the smart city concept. Guatemala enjoys robust planning for green transportation, and the deputy minister anticipated collaboration with the local EV industry to work toward a net-zero future.

The delegation is also scheduled to visit the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, Taipei Port and Taoyuan International Airport. (POC-E)
