Deputy Foreign Minister François Chih-chung Wu celebrated Austria’s National Day Oct. 24 in Taipei City, and noted ever-closer ties to the European nation.

Wu said that the two countries enjoy frequent interaction, as evidenced by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung’s September visit during which Lin joined Taiwan Culture in Europe 2025 events and met with Austrian parliamentarians.

The same month cross-party members from Austria also visited Taiwan, with Werner Amon, chair of the Austrian Parliament’s Austria-Taiwan Friendship Group, meeting Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim at the presidential office in Taipei City, when she lauded staunch mutual relations in the fields of culture, economy and trade.

Christian Helbig, director of Austrian Office Taipei, welcomed the fact that universities in both countries had signed memorandums of understanding and looked forward to an expansion of working holidays for young people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Helbig said that the Austrian office actively supports bilateral cultural exchange. He said that the Belvedere Palace Museums in Vienna will collaborate with Taipei’s National Museum of History in December on an exhibition, “A Century of Viennese Flower Painting.”

In a further boost to warm relations, Austria’s Federal Ministry of Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure (BMIMI) resumed recognition of Taiwan-issued international driving permits in October. The MOFA will also coordinate with the Ministry of Transportation and Communications to promptly restore reciprocal treatment for holders of Austria-issued IDPs. (POC-E)
