Deputy Foreign Minister François Chih-chung Wu said Taiwan will not take provocative actions and will continue to maintain the cross-strait status quo to avoid escalating tensions.

Wu made the remarks in a recent interview with Canadian French-language newspaper Le Devoir, in which he outlined Taiwan’s position on China’s military pressure and regional security challenges, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. The interview was conducted in Taipei City.

The deputy minister said Chinese warplanes have frequently entered Taiwan’s air defense identification zone in recent years, while naval vessels have operated around the island on a near-daily basis. He noted that these actions reflect Beijing’s efforts to pursue unification without the use of force, though it has not ruled out military action.

Wu emphasized that if China were to launch an attack on Taiwan and gain control of the country, its military reach would extend into the western Pacific, adding that such a development would threaten the security of Japan and the Philippines and alter the region’s strategic balance.

The deputy minister underscored that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are closely linked to security in the Indo-Pacific.

Regarding the eight-year special defense budget of NT$1.25 trillion (US$40 billion) proposed by the Executive Yuan in November 2025, Wu said the plan demonstrates Taiwan’s commitment to strengthening its self-defense capabilities. He added that the initiative is intended to signal Taiwan’s resolve to the international community. (POC-E)
