Deputy Foreign Minister François Chih-chung Wu said Taiwan is committed to deepening cooperation with democracies around the world to create a non-red supply chain and safeguard the democratic community’s economic security and technological independence.

The deputy minister made the remarks during an interview with journalists from Poland’s Polskie Radio Jan. 29 in Taipei City for an article published Feb. 3 in Ukrainian on the broadcaster’s website.

According to Wu, the actions of authoritarian regimes, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and China’s military intimidation against Taiwan, demonstrate their desire to change the international order no matter the threat to regional security. To counter these challenges, Taiwan has adopted a “Not Today Policy” that increased the national defense budget and seeks out international support to convey a message to China’s leadership that assaulting Taiwan would entail accepting heavy costs, he said.

The deputy minister said that Taiwan refutes China’s false narrative that describes the question of Taiwan as a domestic affair, and instead insists on recognition of the fact that Taiwan interacts reciprocally with other countries and has mature democratic governance, a stable economy, and a solid national defense. Wu added that the country will continue to expand mutually beneficial cooperation with partners through the pragmatic operation of its overseas missions and on the strength of its key position in the global artificial intelligence and semiconductor sectors.

Wu called Czechia and Poland Taiwan’s strategic partners and described their collaboration to provide humanitarian aid to Ukrainians as proof of the democratic camp’s determination to unite and fight against authoritarian expansion.

The Russia-Ukraine war reminds Taiwan that it must strengthen social resilience and asymmetric combat capabilities, the deputy minister said, adding that the country has learned from Ukraine’s experience and is developing drones to build a deterrent force by taking advantage of its chip manufacturing strength. He further urged Ukraine to exchange information and reaffirmed that Taiwan has strictly enforced existing sanctions to prevent the flow of its military components into Russia. (YCH-E)
