Deputy FM Wu gives interview to Sky News

UpdatesDeputy FM Wu gives interview to Sky News
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs François Chih-chung Wu warned that China is preparing to invade Taiwan and said that global stability and prosperity are inextricably linked to Taiwan’s survival.

The deputy minister made the remarks during an interview with Helen-Ann Smith for a special report published July 31 by U.K.-based media outlet Sky News.

Describing Taiwan as free, vibrant and democratic, the report said Taiwan is modernizing its defense capabilities to enhance deterrence against threats from China. As Taiwan is a global semiconductor hub, the report said its security and stability are important to geopolitics and play a key role in the Taiwan-U.S. strategic partnership.

According to Wu, China is using various means to pressure Taiwan, hoping to force Taiwan to launch a “first strike” that can then serve as a pretext for its military action. He said that Taiwan will not fall into this trap, and added that Taiwan must remain vigilant against China’s intentions.

International technological development relies heavily on chips produced in Taiwan, and if Taiwan were attacked, it would disrupt the global semiconductor supply chain and inflict immeasurable damage on the economy and technological systems around the world, Wu said. He added that because deterring China’s aggression is in the shared interest of all, it is a joint responsibility of the global community of democracies.

In terms of Taiwan-U.S. relations, the deputy minister said Washington continues arms sales to Taiwan under the Taiwan Relations Act and helps ensure peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. He added that President Trump’s stated goal to “Make America Great Again” will be hard to achieve without Taiwan chips. (SFC-E)
