Deputy Foreign Minister François Chih-chung Wu hosted a tea reception for the Taiwan-U.K. Semiconductor Joint Skills Project participants March 13 in Taipei City, welcoming electrical engineering graduate students from top U.K. universities on their two-week visit to Taiwan.

Wu said he is thrilled to see the arrival of the first group of British students following the signing of the Taiwan-U.K. Memorandum of Understanding on the Semiconductor Joint Skills Project last September. Exchanges between the visiting students and their counterparts from top Taiwanese universities and representatives from the semiconductor and technology communities will help strengthen diverse bilateral cooperation, he added.

Taiwan and the U.K. are like-minded partners with close and friendly relations, the deputy foreign minister said, noting that the project further advances the shared vision of cultivating talent in key industries. He added that Taiwan looks forward to sending students to the U.K.

British Office Representative Ruth Bradley-Jones said that the project shows that Taiwan-U.K. ties go far beyond a symbolic relationship, as this substantive cooperative project suggests. She expressed hope that the students taking part will make the most of the opportunity to build ties between the semiconductor sectors of both sides.

Terry Tsao, president of Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International Taiwan, said the project leverages the U.K.’s strengths in research and design and Taiwan’s advantages in manufacturing and advanced packaging, while Derek Boyd, co-founder of the U.K. Electronics Skills Foundation, expressed appreciation for the project for offering British students valuable learning opportunities in Taiwan.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the event was also attended by over 60 officials and representatives from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, National Science and Technology Council, National Taiwan University and relevant industries. (YCH-E)
