Deputy Foreign Minister Lee gives interview to Sweden’s Aftonbladet

Deputy Foreign Minister Roy Chun Lee said the government of Taiwan is diligently enhancing its self-defense capabilities and garnering global support in the face of China’s military threats.

Lee made the remarks during an interview with Wolfgang Hansson for an article and video published Sept. 30 on the website of Swedish daily Aftonbladet.

According to the deputy minister, the median line of the Taiwan Strait has long been considered the boundary between Taiwan and China. However, Beijing attempts to change the status quo by sending warplanes and battleships over the line and asserting that cross-strait disputes are an internal matter that outside forces should not engage with, he added.

The deputy minister said China is also using gray-zone tactics including economic coercion, disinformation campaigns and cyberattacks, some of which are aimed at interfering with Taiwan’s upcoming presidential election.

At the same time, China is using its position in international bodies like the World Health Organization and World Health Assembly to isolate Taiwan from the global community, Lee said, adding that as a result the country has been unable to share its pandemic management success freely with the rest of the world.

Lee said that Taiwan is taking inspiration from Ukraine, where Russia’s economic clout and military might have not delivered the easy victory many expected. With unwavering resolution and strong support from like-minded partners, a small country can resist even a powerful enemy, he added. (SFC-E)
