The annual meeting of the European chapter of the Formosa Club, a group of cross-party parliamentarians working to enhance relations with Taiwan, was held Oct. 27 in Taipei City, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
According to the MOFA, the event was attended by lawmakers from the European Parliament and 17 countries, including Czechia, France, Germany, Italy and the U.K. It marks the first time the Formosa Club’s annual conference has been held in Taipei.
Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung said during his opening remarks that the Formosa Club has demonstrated democratic solidarity and staunch support for Taiwan since its launch in 2019. In the face of international uncertainties, Taiwan is committed to promoting values-based diplomacy, enhancing economic security, strengthening defense capabilities and deepening partnerships with European countries, he added.
Cooperation between Taiwan and Europe in energy, semiconductors, technology and trade has been going from strength to strength in recent years, Lin said, adding that Europe is currently Taiwan’s third-largest trading partner and the largest source of foreign investment. He said that he looks forward to jointly advancing mutual peace and prosperity.
Rihards Kols, conference chair and member of the EU’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, said that the club has been a major international platform to address Taiwan’s inclusion in international institutions and formulate measures to combat disinformation and economic coercion. He emphasized that Taiwan stands on the democratic front line against authoritarian expansion and that peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is crucial to the global economy and security, adding that the meeting reflects shared democratic commitment to fighting authoritarianism and safeguarding the international rules-based order.
A banquet was held following the event, which was attended by Deputy Foreign Minister François Chih-chung Wu, Legislative Yuan President Daniel K.Y. Han and LY Vice President Johnny C. Chiang. It also brought together over 80 lawmakers and representatives from European offices in Taiwan.
The Formosa Club was established by chairs of Taiwan friendship groups of the EP and the national parliaments of France, Germany and the U.K., the MOFA said. Club members annually voice support for Taiwan’s engagement in the World Health Assembly and frequently issue joint letters condemning China’s military threats to Taiwan, the ministry added. (YCH-E)
