The Executive Yuan approved Taiwan’s new Nationally Determined Contribution for carbon emissions Nov. 3 in the lead-up to the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change set to take place Nov. 10-21 in Brazil.

Proposed by the Ministry of Environment, the targets call for reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by 26-30 percent below 2005 levels by 2030, 30-34 percent by 2032 and 36-40 percent by 2035.

The goals reflect Taiwan’s ambition while aligning with national circumstances and the UNFCCC principle of differentiated responsibilities, the MOENV added.

After a Nov. 6 briefing by MOENV Minister Peng Chi-ming, Premier Cho Jung-tai said that as a responsible member of the global community, Taiwan is fully committed to complying with the Paris Agreement adopted at COP21.

Cho said the EY has approved 20 carbon emission reduction action plans and instructed all related agencies to intensify cooperation to achieve the policy goals, echoing the COP’s call for a “Global Mutirão” to spur climate action worldwide.

According to the MOENV, the ministry and other related agencies have jointly organized more than 20 public sessions around the country since January to canvass public support and solicit input for the goals.

The benchmarks are the second most ambitious in Asia after Japan, the ministry said, adding that it will continue to monitor progress alongside global developments and refine policies accordingly. (SFC-E)
