The Executive Yuan’s annual Science and Technology Advisory Meeting concluded Jan. 7 in Taipei City, charting new courses for the use of Taiwan’s artificial intelligence technology to develop economic competitiveness and national security.

According to the National Science and Technology Council, the two-day event welcomed academics, experts and business leaders from around the country and the world, including Academia Sinica President James C. Liao. Attendees proposed that the public and private sectors should aim to apply advanced AI technology to drive next-generation technology, work toward building sovereign AI and support the development of small- and medium-sized enterprises.

Liao summarized the results of discussions at the closing ceremony and presented strategic recommendations including the construction of infrastructure to enhance national computing power, as well as cooperation with international partners to develop new AI technology that makes use of Taiwan’s top-tier hardware. The NSTC said the report also advised the government to test a AI data-sharing platform in a niche industry to boost innovation while maintaining strong protections for participants’ commercial secrets and national security.

Relevant authorities will further cultivate additional AI personnel and establish diverse academic-industry collaboration mechanisms, the NSTC said. The council added that it is equally important to build a fair and legal data management environment that aligns with international trends, and to complete the legislation of AI copyright guidelines and relevant regulations before promoting data openness to support more national AI technology research and development.

In opening remarks President Lai Ching-te said the government will continue to promote the Ten Major AI Infrastructure Projects initiative to create an open, dynamic and inclusive AI innovation ecosystem in Taiwan. Speaking at the meeting Premier Cho Jung-tai said that Taiwan will leverage its semiconductor industry advantages to advance forward-looking technologies and applications. (YCH-E)
