Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung called on countries in the first island chain to work together to enhance social resilience and regional security cooperation.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lin made the remarks during his address at the “Shield of Democracy: The First Island Chain Social Resilience Cooperation Forum” April 11 in Taipei City.

Organized by Taipei-based Formosa Republican Association, the forum was held in response to the call to strengthen national defense resilience and economic security under President Lai Ching-te’s Four Pillars of Peace action plan.

The one-day event involved experts on national defense and strategic studies from Japan, South Korea, the Philippines and the U.S., including Charles A. Flynn, former commanding general of the U.S. Army Pacific.

Lin said the first island chain should be viewed as a single theater. He called for concerted efforts among countries in the region to build a democratic shield to counter China’s military oppression, gray-zone tactics, cognitive warfare and economic coercion.

The minister said uncrewed systems are important components of this shield and key to establishing asymmetrical strategies. Taiwan must establish itself as a critical regional hub by leading system innovation and providing a platform for training and capacity building, he added.

At the same time, the minister said Taiwan is committed to working with its like-minded partners to construct a trusted, resilient and integrated democratic supply chain. He said the democratic shield is not a wall, but a network that will transform the first island chain from a front line into a stable and cooperative zone of freedom.

Later in the day, the MOFA’s drone diplomacy task force and the FRA also staged a seminar on establishing a resilient regional drone supply chain. Around 80 experts and industry representatives took part to discuss ways for local sectors to expand their global presence despite threats from authoritarian regimes. (SFC-E)
