Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung emphasized that faced with security challenges, democracies in the First Island Chain should strengthen collaborative mechanisms to uphold regional peace and stability.
Lin made the remarks in an interview with The Japan Times which was published in the media’s newspaper March 5, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Topics ranged from the one-theater concept and Taiwan-U.S. security cooperation to Taiwan-Japan collaboration in the defense industry.
In his remarks, the minister noted that despite China’s continuous expansion of military deployment in the East China Sea, the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait in recent years, Taiwan has not yet been institutionally incorporated into the First Island Chain framework, adding that lacking Taiwan, forming a robust and effective security network in the Indo-Pacific will be challenging.
Lin further expounded on the one-theater concept, stating that if any one part of the island chain were to be in crisis, all the other neighboring nations would be affected. As such, it is necessary to reinforce intelligence sharing, joint exercises and response planning to enhance overall deterrence, the MOFA said.
On Taiwan-U.S. relations, Lin said that the U.S. has continued to support Taiwan’s security, as evidenced by its recent approval of an arms package of around US$11billion. He added that the sale reinforces Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities and maintains military balance in the region.
As for the Japan’s role, the minister congratulated Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi again on her party’s Feb. 8 success in the general election. The minister welcomed Japan’s advancement of defense industries as reinforcing the first island chain’s overall deterrence capabilities. (POC-E)
