Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung conferred the Friendship Medal of Diplomacy on Dovilė Šakalienė, parliamentarian and former defense minister of Lithuania, March 19 in Taipei City for her long-term contributions to bilateral relations.
According to the foreign minister, Šakalienė is an important and long-standing friend of Taiwan who offered great support for the establishment of the Taiwanese Representative Office in Lithuania.
During her term as defense minister, she played a key role in releasing her country’s first Indo-Pacific security strategy, Lin said, adding that she also showed unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan and expanding bilateral cooperation on defense and resilience.
Despite their distance, the two countries are closely connected by their shared values of freedom, democracy and respect for the rule of law, Lin said, adding that he hoped to see the partnership continue to thrive.
Šakalienė said in response that the robust bilateral ties are built on both sides’ democratic values, technological prowess and aspirations for freedom and independent thinking. It is hoped that the two sides will continue to enhance the partnership to create a more resilient democratic supply chain to counter authoritarian expansion, she added.
She stressed the importance of democratic unity in the face of increasing convergence of authoritarian regimes, adding that she hopes to see Lithuania and Taiwan enhance partnerships in whole-of-society defense, information security and advanced technologies in the future. (SFC-E)
