Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung hosted a banquet for a delegation from the National Assembly of Panama Nov. 27 in Taipei City and expressed appreciation to the lawmakers for promoting bilateral relations.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the nine-member group is led by Manuel Cohen and Roland De Gracia, co-chairs of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China, and comprises other cross-party legislators.

Lin said Taiwan and Panama both occupy positions of strategic geographic importance, and given the local semiconductor sector’s key role in the global artificial intelligence and democratic supply chains, the two countries can work together to leverage their respective strengths and make greater global contributions.

The minister added that the government has an open and pragmatic approach to bilateral relations and is eager to establish new partnerships for mutual benefit.

In response, Cohen said the delegates see Taiwan as an example in the promotion of democracy, freedom and respect for human rights. The two sides have jointly implemented numerous projects bolstering national development and the well-being of the people, he said, adding that the legislators respect Taiwan for its technological developments and willingness to share its successful experiences with the world.

De Gracia said the delegation aims to reconnect the two sides, adding that the National Assembly will convey the willingness of both sides to reinstate interactions back to Panama and serve as a bridge to bolster two-way cooperation and exchanges.

The group met with Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim earlier the same day. Other key stops on the itinerary for its Nov. 25-29 visit include visits to key cultural and economic facilities and meetings with financial and shipping sector representatives. (SFC-E)
