Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung met with President Santiago Peña Palacios of Paraguay July 14 during his eight-day trip to the South American ally to celebrate the 68th anniversary of diplomatic ties, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
 
Peña welcomed Lin and reaffirmed the solid partnership between Taiwan and Paraguay. He praised the fruitful results of longstanding bilateral cooperation and pledged to continue standing with Taiwan.
 
Lin expressed appreciation to Peña for mentioning Taiwan among Paraguay’s allies in his inauguration speech in August 2023. The minister went on to say that his delegation comprises business representatives from Taiwan’s construction, food processing, high-performance textile, information and communications technology, semiconductor, and smart agriculture industries, adding that some of them will be establishing branches in the Taiwan-Paraguay Smart Technology Park.
 
According to Lin, the government is committed to promoting the Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project in Paraguay to help the country develop its technology sector and thus boost digital transformation. Such measures include the Health Information Management Efficiency Enhancement Project and the Taiwan-Paraguay Polytechnic University, he said, adding that other plans like creating a 5G network are also in the pipeline.
 
Following the meeting, Lin and Peña attended a business investment event. The Paraguayan president said that his country’s long-standing support for Taiwan is based on shared values of freedom, democracy and the people’s self-determination. He stressed the importance of safeguarding Taiwan’s international status and concluded by encouraging more businesses from Taiwan to invest in Paraguay.
 
According to the MOFA, the government will continue to deepen collaboration with Paraguay in areas spanning agriculture, education, energy, infrastructure, public health and technology. (YCH-E)
