UpdatesFM Lin receives Belize delegation, welcomes white shrimp imports to Taiwan
Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung met with a Belize delegation July 28 in Taipei City, highlighting government commitment to strengthening partnerships with the Central American ally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The group is led by Amalia Mai, chief executive officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade. The visitors’ itinerary included the second Taiwan-Belize Economic Cooperation Agreement administrative committee meeting and an investment and trade promotion seminar.

Speaking at the event, Lin first congratulated Belize on its successful general election in March and expressed hope of deepening bilateral economic and trade ties. Participants exchanged views on issues such as scholarship collaboration, the Taiwan Global Pathfinders Initiative and tourism personnel cultivation in Belize, the MOFA said, adding that the foreign minister invited the ally’s officials to take part in the Taipei International Travel Fair in November.

In response, Mai said that friendship between Taiwan and Belize is rooted in shared democratic values and respect for human rights. She expressed appreciation for the scholarship program for Belizean students, adding that it has made the country the top overseas study destination and helped advance Belize’s national development.

Following the meeting, Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi hosted a luncheon for the delegation.

According to the MOFA, the government additionally announced that Taiwan has approved the import of white shrimp from Belize starting July 30. The zero-tariff imports are expected to help fill the annual domestic demand of 30,000 metric tons, the ministry said.

Since the ECA took effect in 2022, economic and trade relations between the two countries have continued to grow, the MOFA said. The allies have also enjoyed close cooperation in areas spanning culture, education, infrastructure, medical care, public health and women’s empowerment since establishing diplomatic ties in 1989, it added.
