Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung expressed hope of deepening cooperation with Europe in building democratic supply chains, countering authoritarian expansion and hybrid threats, and strengthening undersea cable security.
According to the MOFA, Lin made the remarks while hosting a reception for a 10-person European Parliament delegation led by German MEP Michael Gahler, chair of the European Taiwan Friendship Group, Jan. 6 in Taipei City.
In his remarks, Lin noted that bilateral ties have been growing stronger, as evidenced by Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim’s speech at the European Parliament while attending the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China’s annual summit Nov. 7 in Brussels. Lin also took the opportunity to thank the delegates for their continuous support of Taiwan through substantive actions, the ministry said.
In response, Gahler said that with increasing global uncertainties, Taiwan and countries in Europe face multiple common challenges, adding that he looked forward to exploring cooperative economic, security and technological opportunities and that he anticipated the visit would help delegation members gain deeper insight into Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific.
The ministry thanked the EP for its long-standing and unwavering backing and pledged to continue enhancing exchanges while cementing mutually beneficial partnership based on the shared values of democracy, freedom and respect for the rule of law. (POC-E)
