Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung expressed appreciation for comments made by Michael Waltz, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, that reiterated support for Taiwan’s meaningful engagement in international organizations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Waltz spoke favorably of the way Taiwan has brought its resources and technological prowess to bear against major challenges. He made the remarks at a hearing on U.N. accountability and reform organized by the U.S. House of Representatives’ Subcommittee on National Security, Department of State and Related Programs March 20 at the U.N. headquarters in New York.

According to the MOFA, Waltz also indicated that the U.S. opposes China’s misinterpretation of U.N. General Assembly Resolution 2758, viewing it as an attempt to isolate Taiwan from the global community.

Lin said that this strong backing from the U.S. demonstrates that Taiwan is a capable and responsible member of the international community, adding that such a community must not allow the exclusion of a democratic partner that is capable of contributing so much to the world in fields like digital technology, medicine and supply chain resilience.

The minister reiterated that U.N. Resolution 2758 does not mention Taiwan and cannot be used to exclude Taiwan’s engagement in the U.N. system or other global organizations. Only the democratically elected government can represent Taiwan’s 23 million people on the international stage, Lin added.

The MOFA urged the international community to continue pointing out distortions of the resolution to prevent China’s authoritarian government from using the fallacy as legal grounds for military action. As a force for good in the region, Taiwan pledges to safeguard peace, stability and prosperity of the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific. (POC-E)
