According to the HAC, the performers, based in the northern county of Miaoli, dazzled audiences July 19 at the Palais Ferstel in Vienna; the Primacialny Palace July 20 in Bratislava, Slovakia; and the Palac Zofin in Prague on July 24. They performed "Pong Feng Beauty," a romantic comedy that spotlights the traditional Hakka tea-picking culture and showcases melodious mountain songs and elaborate traditional attire.
The group also performed “Eight Immortals Go Across the Sea” in Vienna July 25 at the Urania. The piece is a popular comedy with uplifting themes of the value of collaboration and cooperation in overcoming great obstacles. The performance was part of the 2025 Taiwan Cultural Year in Europe, an initiative jointly launched by the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs earlier this year to advance cultural diplomacy.
At the shows in Vienna, Taiwan Rep. to Austria Liu Suan-yung praised the group for its brilliant performance that fully reflected the depth and breadth of traditional Hakka culture, and thanked the HAC for arranging the performance as a way to expand people-to-people exchanges.
A Taiwan expatriate of Hakka origin who is currently residing in Vienna said it was rare to have the chance to speak their native tongue while living abroad. They added that cultural events like this are a great way to promote Hakka culture and language. (SFC-E)
