India’s Modi thanks Putin for Ukraine update

The prime minister says he was briefed by Russian leader about the latest developments in the peace process

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin for updating him on efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict, according to a message shared on Modi’s official X account on Friday.

Modi described the phone call he had earlier in the day as “a very good and detailed conversation,” referring to Putin as a “friend” and thanking him for briefing him on the situation.

The discussion also touched on bilateral relations and Putin’s expected visit to India later this year, the statement said.

Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Indian exports, describing the measure as retaliation for New Delhi’s continued purchases of Russian goods, which Trump claimed indirectly supported Moscow’s military in the fight against Ukraine. Indian officials have defied the pressure, asserting that domestic firms are free to source critical materials from suppliers of their choosing.

Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, met with Putin this week in Moscow, and both sides described the talks as significant progress toward resolving the Ukraine crisis. However, Washington has made no indication that it would lift the tariffs on Indian goods.

The Kremlin said Putin shared with Modi details of his conversations with Witkoff. The Indian prime minister has confirmed New Delhi’s principled support for a diplomatic resolution of the Ukraine conflict.

Meanwhile, Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval is currently in Russia for high-level meetings, including talks Friday with Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manurov focused on cooperation in strategic industries.
