President Lai Ching-te received an international delegation to the annual Yushan Forum at the Presidential Office March 17 in Taipei City, pledging to extend cooperation and friendship with regional and global partners through the event.

According to the PO, the group included Mahendra Chaudhry, former prime minister of Fiji; Gustavo Emigdio Villate Samaniego, minister of information and communication technologies of Paraguay; Dovilė Šakalienė, former minister of national defense of Lithuania; and Jan Lipavský, former minister of foreign affairs of Czechia.

Lai said this year’s forum is the largest ever, demonstrating the international community’s growing focus on Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific. The visiting guests also shared their countries’ experiences, showcasing shared expectations for international security and resilience, the president noted, emphasizing that maintaining stability and security in the Indo-Pacific is a common goal.

Taiwan plays a key role in global supply chains and continues to pursue peace in the region, Lai said. Peace can only be achieved through strength, and given the importance of cross-strait peace and stability to domestic and global security and prosperity, the country is committed to enhancing its self-defense capabilities, he added.

Taiwan is also dedicated to forming international teams to foster solidarity and make the world more stable, prosperous and sustainable, the president said. He added that the country is willing to share its experience with other countries in areas spanning democratic governance, supply chain resilience, maritime security and regional stability, while continuing to work with like-minded partners on global challenges.

Following his remarks, Chaudhry spoke on behalf of the group and praised Taiwan’s democracy and innovations. He lauded Taiwan’s commitment to regional stability, economic prosperity and sustainable development, as well as its efforts to build a more resilient, inclusive and closely connected Indo-Pacific.

Describing the Yushan Forum as a catalyst for creating long-term solutions for global challenges, the former prime minister thanked Taiwan for promoting international solidarity and pledged to deepen collaboration with the country. (YCH-E)
