President Lai Ching-te recently sent a letter to Pope Leo XIV in response to the pontiff’s message for the 59th World Day of Peace, reaffirming Taiwan’s commitment to democratic values.
In the letter, Lai expressed support for the pope’s call for people worldwide to reject violence and war and pursue lasting peace grounded in love and justice. He said Taiwan shares these principles and remains dedicated to promoting stability and cooperation.
Lai cited Chiang Wei-shui, a pioneer of Taiwan’s democracy movement, who in 1921 envisioned Taiwan as a guardian of world peace. He said Taiwan today plays an important role in global geopolitics and that cross-strait peace and stability are vital to international security.
Despite long-standing military pressure from authoritarian regimes and attempts to undermine Taiwan’s sovereignty by misrepresenting U.N. General Assembly Resolution 2758, Taiwan has upheld its democratic system and commitment to peace, Lai said. He added that Taiwan is willing to engage in cross-strait dialogue based on parity and dignity, with mutual trust and respect for human rights as the foundation for lasting peace.
Addressing the pope’s concerns about the growing military use of emerging technologies and artificial intelligence, Lai called for international norms to prevent misuse. He said Taiwan is strengthening global supply chains through the development of trustworthy AI and semiconductors and advancing the Ten Major AI Infrastructure Projects.
The president added that Taiwan is helping micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises adopt AI to accelerate digital and green transformation. He said these efforts aim to promote sustainable development and shared prosperity.
Echoing the pope’s appeal for humane international relations, Lai said Taiwan is working closely with like-minded partners under its values-based diplomacy and Taiwan Can Help spirit. He reaffirmed the country’s determination to cooperate with the Holy See to advance world peace and uphold human rights and other shared values. (YCH-E)
