President Lai Ching-te said Feb. 3 that Taiwan is committed to deepening Taiwan-U.S. economic and trade relations and diversifying the country’s global technological presence, enabling industries to remain firmly rooted in Taiwan while expanding international market penetration.

Lai made the remarks during a news conference to share the results of the sixth annual Taiwan-U.S. Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. He noted that this round of talks touched upon strategic alignment on supply chain security and cooperation on critical minerals and in third countries.

The president said that following the discussions, Taiwan-U.S. cooperation will focus on enhancing economic security, strengthening an innovation-driven economy and fostering a more prosperous future. Amid shifting geopolitical conditions, artificial intelligence, semiconductors and other high-tech industries are accelerating the development of resilient non-red supply chains, he said, adding that the two sides signed the Joint Statement on the Pax Silica Declaration and Taiwan-U.S. Economic Security Cooperation to demonstrate their shared commitment to economic security.

Taiwan will promote supply chain security, unmanned aircraft system component certification and the removal of tax barriers to investment, ensuring the bilateral partnership keeps pace with rapid technological transformation, Lai said. The president stressed the importance of industrial complementarity and regulatory reliability, adding that Taiwan will align more closely with international trade standards, ensure a predictable and transparent legal environment, and strengthen industrial coordination with the U.S.

Lai went on to say that Taiwan will also continue to strengthen economic and trade partnerships with other countries. He noted that Taiwan has renewed investment protection agreements and double taxation avoidance pacts with major Southeast Asian investment partners in recent years and inked digital trade arrangements with Japan and the U.K. last year.

The president concluded by saying that Taiwan has both the strength and the confidence to work with fellow democracies to steer the next generation of prosperity. (YCH-E)
