President Lai Ching-te said that the government is committed to strengthening Taiwan’s national defense capabilities and public security, advancing economic development initiatives, and bolstering social investment and welfare programs.
The president made the remarks in a prerecorded video released Feb. 15, prior to Lunar New Year’s Eve. He thanked troops and coast guard members for their around-the-clock efforts, as well as dedicated staff in sectors such as law enforcement, health care and public transportation for keeping society running smoothly during holidays.
According to Lai, countless unsung heroes have contributed to the country’s strength and resilience over the past year. He cited rescue teams and engineers who assisted in disasters and the micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) that drive half of Taiwan’s economy.
The government will continue its hard work in the year ahead to safeguard national security and maintain social stability, the president said, adding that it will ensure Taiwan maintains its leading technological edge and provide further tangible support to MSMEs to create more opportunities for Taiwanese businesses.
Equally important is to boost development across central and southern Taiwan to create a balanced nation, Lai said. He added that the government will continue supporting all sectors of society by increasing maternity benefits and birth subsidies, effective in January; providing additional financial aid for low- and medium-low-income households; and raising welfare allowance for elderly farmers and national pension benefits.
The president concluded by praying for peace and prosperity, wishing all people safety and happiness, and inviting everyone to greet an even better year ahead. (YCH-E)
