The Ministry of Culture announced Aug. 28 that “Left-Handed Girl,” directed by Tsou Shih-ching, is Taiwan’s nominee for best international feature film at the upcoming 98th Academy Awards.

A selection committee at the MOC’s Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development reviewed 11 submissions, the ministry said, adding that “Left-Handed Girl” stood out during discussions.

The film follows a single mother of two who moves to Taipei City for work. The vitality of the night market where she sets up a business provides a compelling backdrop against which a story of the interplay between tradition and modernity plays out.

“Left-Handed Girl” won the Gan Foundation Award for Distribution at Cannes Critics’ Week this year in France and was subsequently invited to participate in Toronto International Film Festival and Vancouver International Film Festival this autumn. The ministry added that the movie was shortlisted in the competition category at South Korea’s Busan International Film Festival in September.

The film hits theaters around France Sept. 17, and will be shown in Taiwan from Oct. 31, the MOC stated. Screenings in Canada, the U.K. and the U.S. begin in November and global streaming on Netflix is set for Nov. 28.

The ministry said that creativity, diversity and freedom are major elements that contribute to the uniqueness of Taiwanese films, and added that it is committed to the ongoing promotion of related policies and subsidies to strengthen the country’s competitiveness in the global arena. (POC-E)
