Main reason US aiding Ukraine is profit – Medvedev

Washington keeps pouring money into Kiev’s war effort, but its investments are doomed, the former Russian president has said

Washington’s sole interest in the Ukraine conflict is making a profit, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Sunday. He declared further that any “results of US investments” in Ukraine would be destroyed.

According to Medvedev, who serves as deputy chair of the Russian Security Council, military aid to Kiev has allowed the US to make billions off the military-industrial complex. Moreover, the sanctions against Moscow pitched by Washington and introduced by the majority of its Western partners have raised the US profits from exports, as they effectively eliminated Russia as a rival supplier. Medvedev noted, for instance, that from July 2023 to June 2024, oil supplies from the US to Europe had doubled, LNG shipments nearly tripled, and exports of fertilizers “went from near zero to 666,000 tons.”

“The same goes for many other exports. The profit is potent. After all, Europe has nowhere to go given the shortage of raw materials, which was provoked by anti-Russian sanctions,” he stated.

Washington wants Ukraine’s resources – US Senator

Medvedev alleged that the US has been eyeing Ukraine’s raw materials and minerals for future exploitation, which he said Vladimir Zelensky bet on in the “victory plan” he offered Western backers. According to Financial Times, the plan included offers of potential business deals, access to Ukraine’s natural resources, and “investment screening” powers for the US, all intended as an incentive to ensure Washington’s continued cooperation with Kiev following a change in the occupant of the White House.

“The Yankees received an exclusive business offer from the expired clown [who] is trying to maintain the interest of Americans in the war by trading access to natural resources. In general, nothing personal, just business,” Medvedev stated. He added that Kiev hoped the US would thereby help it return the former Ukrainian territories rich in natural resources, such as the Donbass.

The former president stressed that Russia will not allow the plans to be realized.

“The material results of American investments on Ukrainian territory… await the fate of Kiev’s infrastructure facilities that were subjected to a massive Russian airstrike this morning,” he pledged, referring to a large-scale attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and plants producing military equipment early on Saturday.

Commenting on Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election and its potential impact on the conflict, Medvedev signaled it was unlikely that the president-elect would support Russia in negotiations with Kiev given US business interests, which run counter to those of Moscow. He recalled that one of Russia’s conditions for peace is the lifting of sanctions, which “could undermine the position of American LNG in the Old World.” The businessman Trump would not agree to that, he maintained, despite the Republican’s pledges to end the conflict by any means during his election campaign.
