Media outlets laud Taiwan’s democratic resilience

Taiwan’s democratic resilience as well as its semiconductor role were praised in articles recently published by media outlets La Tribune and L’Express, as well as Le Nouvelliste from Haiti, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said July 3.

The articles were published following the visit of a Francophone media group June 8-14 to Taiwan. Comprising political and economic reporters from France, Haiti, Ivory Coast and Switzerland, the group met with Deputy Foreign Minister François Chih-chung Wu and Ambassador-at-large Audrey Tang and also called on authorities, enterprises and cultural institutions.

According to La Tribune, Wu said Taiwan remains a semiconductor industry leader as its share of global high-end chip production increased to 95 percent in 2024. The country is deepening cooperation with European companies including Air Liquide S.A., ASML Holding N.V. and BASF SE, he said, noting that domestic firms have outperformed counterparts in China.

The percentage of Taiwan investment in China as part of total foreign investment has dropped from 84 percent in 2014 to 7 percent in 2024, demonstrating a more diversified economic layout including and deepening ties with Japan, the U.S. and European and South Asian countries, the deputy foreign minister added.

L’Express noted that Wu said Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. produces 2-nanometer chips at home and at its U.S. plants, it manufactures 4-nanometer chips. Wu raised concern over China’s threats to assault Taiwan, adding that if there were to be a conflict in the Taiwan Strait, the global cost would be heavy.

Le Nouvelliste quoted Wu as commenting that any wavering in Taiwan democracy would lead to regional instability and trigger a serious impact on global trade. Thus, the deputy foreign minister stressed the importance of maintaining peace in the Indo-Pacific and reaffirmed Taiwan’s commitment to upholding democracy, it added.

In La Tribune, Tang elaborated on strengthening defense capability against information warfare, noting that Taiwan passed legislation requiring digital signatures on political and advertising messages, which reduced false social media advertisements by 90 percent. Since 2019 media literacy courses have been incorporated into education at all levels to help the next generation recognize disinformation and deal with digital manipulation. (YCH-E)
