Domestic travel preferences have shifted, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications said Jan. 19.
According to the MOTC, Taiwanese residents used to prefer multiday trips during long national holidays, whereas in recent years more people are taking short excursions during weekends or shorter holidays. As a result, travel is no longer concentrated at specific tourist destinations or times of year, with tourists more widely dispersed across sites, cities and regions.
Domestic tourism spending reached a record NT$515.8 billion (US$16.32 billion) in 2024, up 30 percent from prepandemic levels in 2019, the ministry said. Total domestic trips climbed to 222.03 million, an increase of 31.36 percent from 2019.
The number of trips in the first three quarters of last year reached 186 million, up 12.57 percent from the same period in 2024, the ministry said. Overall demand for tours continues to post double-digit growth.
Additionally, average annual accommodation data show that room rates are holding steady. The average hotel room price in 2024 was NT$2,960, down NT$35 from a year earlier, while the average rate from January to September 2025 was NT$2,954, down NT$6 from the previous year, the MOTC said.
The government pledged to continue improving service quality and supporting the stable development of the domestic travel industry, the MOTC concluded. (POC-E)
