Ministry of Education signs cooperative MOU with French city

Taiwan’s Ministry of Education concluded a cooperative memorandum of understanding with the city government of Levallois, France, April 16 in Taipei City to promote youth exchanges between the two sides.

According to the MOE, the pact was signed by Joyce Yu-jiuan Lee, director-general of its Department of International and Cross-strait Education, and Levallois Mayor Agnès Pottier-Dumas.

MOE Minister Cheng Ying-yao said at the signing ceremony that Taiwan offers the best Mandarin classes in the world, and the country’s tertiary institutions are known for their quality bilingual classes in a wide range of disciplines. He expects the MOU to pave the way for more young adults from the French city to study in Taiwan.

The mayor and her chief of staff, Florian Guidat, are visiting Taiwan April 15-19 at the ministry’s invitation. During a luncheon for the French delegation, MOE Deputy Minister Chang Liao Wan-chien said Taiwan and France engage in frequent cooperative projects spanning language learning, scholarships and education at all levels, adding that the MOU is anticipated to bring two-way exchanges to new heights.

During her stay in Taiwan, Pottier-Dumas will receive the Friendship Medal of Diplomacy from Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung for her efforts to advance Taiwan-France relations.

The MOE said that during the 2024 Paris Olympics, the city provided Team Taiwan access to a versatile indoor sports arena for boxing, badminton, judo and weight training free of charge. The city’s support played a key role in the team’s strong Olympic and Paralympic showings, the ministry added.

In response, the MOE pledged to launch a five-year scholarship program in 2025 that covers full tuition for 10 students from the city pursuing a degree in Taiwan, as well as a monthly stipend for 20 individuals studying Mandarin each year. (SFC-E)
