The Floral Industry Innovation Center was launched by the Ministry of Agriculture Aug. 1 in southern Taiwan’s Tainan City, highlighting government commitment to industrial transformation and floral export competitiveness.
According to the MOA, the FIIC will integrate resources from the Taiwan Orchid Plantation and the Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute’s Floricultural Experiment Branch. It will also embrace functions such as industry services, research and development and technology verification to support breeding, production, cold-chain logistics and marketing.
The center will assist enterprises to introduce automation, smart and low-carbon production systems to improve overall production efficiency and stabilize quality, the ministry said. Response to challenges such as climate change and the competitive global market will also be met by the entity.
At the launch ceremony, MOA Minister Chen Junne-jih said that the FIIC is a flagship base for Taiwan’s floriculture industry. He noted that the launch of the center also marks a milestone for the complete transformation of the industry towards high value products, modernization and internationalization. Chen added that it also echoes President Lai Ching-te’s call for the world to appreciate the beauty of Taiwan and its flowers.
The center will be industry demand-led and implement R&D capabilities to drive floriculture development, Chen said. The entity will facilitate cooperation among academics, businesses, experts and officials while promoting circular economy and green transition, he added.
Launched in 2003, the former Taiwan Orchid Plantation was run by the MOA starting 2023 and was upgraded to the FIIC under the ministry’s 2025-2032 public infrastructure plan, the MOA said. Statistics show that Taiwan’s floriculture exports totaled NT$6.5 billion (US$212.3 million) in 2024, with orchidaceae reaching NT$6 billion and accounting for over 90 percent of the total, it added.
