The Ministry of Culture held an event Oct. 16 in Taipei City to encourage domestic arts troupes to seek global opportunities by bringing curious groups together with those that participated in this year’s Festival Off Avignon in France and Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the U.K.
The lineup for the 59th Festival Off Avignon in July included Hung Dance and D_Antidote Production from Taipei, Mailantia Dance Company from Tainan City, and Focasa Circus Art from Taoyuan City. The 78th Fringe, held in August, saw performances from Taipei-based Lu Production and Yinalang Group, Chun Dance from Taoyuan, and Tainan-based Slashie With You Theatre. They held discussions on performances, audience communication strategies, behind-the-scenes administrative techniques and their assessment of the overall effectiveness of various support systems.
Deputy Culture Minister Lee Ching-hwi said at the event that the MOC has sent more than 100 groups to the two European summer festivals since 2007. She added that the event was intended to facilitate the exchange of knowledge among the participating groups, and said she hoped the resulting dialogues would broaden the horizons of Taiwan’s performing artists.
According to the MOC, the 79 performances staged by Taiwanese groups at this year’s Festival Off Avignon were widely reported by media outlets such as Le Monde and Radio France International. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe’s Taiwan Season hosted 92 performances, the ministry said, adding that the season was recommended by The Guardian and the involved troupes received multiple invitations from international curators after their performances.
The MOC said it expects the event to help more Taiwanese groups explore overseas markets and raise the country’s profile on the international stage. (YCH-E)
