The Ministry of Digital Affairs hosted a symposium on sovereign artificial intelligence and sustainable development Oct. 29 in Taipei City, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing international cooperation in the field.

The event brought together experts from Taiwan and abroad to explore the practical challenges and opportunities of sovereign AI governance. Kang Hayun, senior research fellow at the Korea Information Society Development Institute in the province of North Chungcheong, provided the keynote address and served as a panelist during the event.

According to the MODA, Kang spoke of Korea’s experience in incorporating international AI principles, and later sessions covered Taiwan and Japan’s developments and strategies along with Taiwan’s practices in building localized AI agents. The panel session outlined pathways toward integrated global AI governance discussed from a cross-border policy coordination perspective and folded in technical standards alignment and technology independence.

Eric Juang, director general of the MODA’s Department of International Cooperation, said in opening remarks that major economies worldwide are developing AI governance frameworks and regulations to ensure technology agrees with ethical principles and public expectations. Taiwan actively engages in global initiatives promoted by international bodies such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, he noted, adding that the ministry will strengthen collaboration among academia, government and industry to advance digital resilience and shape the country into an innovative and sustainable digital nation.

Insights shared during the event will guide future policies, the MODA said, adding that it looks forward to working with global partners to build a trustworthy digital future. (YCH-E)
