MOE pledges to continue promoting course transformation

The Ministry of Education said it is committed to promoting course transformation at the tertiary level to equip students with interdisciplinary capabilities, cultural literacy and digital skills to handle the challenges of the artificial intelligence era.

The MOE made the remarks in a statement released Jan. 21. According to the ministry, a presentation was staged Jan. 17 in southern Taiwan’s Tainan City to highlight the achievements of its Talent Cultivation Project for Digital Humanities over the past two years.

Under the project, 206 courses were offered by 16 universities and colleges, with 7,800 students taking part, the MOE said, citing a class created by Tainan-based National Cheng Kung University to restore the Indigenous Siraya language via digital tools. Of the total, 33 courses have become required subjects, while 74 businesses and local organizations have jointly taught courses or collaborated with students on their projects, the ministry added.

The MOE also held an activity spotlighting the next phase of its Digital Humanity Interdisciplinary Talent Smart Leadership Project the same day, under which financial support will be provided to 15 universities and colleges to facilitate the design of courses in diverse areas spanning big data and business analytics, technological applications in the cultural and creative industry, and generative AI video creation to advance innovative thinking and problem-solving skills.

The events follow similar presentations held by the MOE last December in Tainan to showcase 48 courses designed by 32 vocational high schools under another ministry funding program. The curriculums incorporated digital tools such as ChatGPT, Padlet and Suno, the ministry said.

The MOE concluded by pledging that it will continue to foster a diverse learning environment while encouraging educational facilities around the country to share resources to raise the country’s global educational profile. (YCH-E)
