MOE touts AI applications for education

UpdatesMOE touts AI applications for education
The Ministry of Education presented results of a project to enhance teachers’ ability to incorporate artificial intelligence into a curriculum July 30 in Taichung City in central Taiwan.

In response to the rapid growth of generative AI in global education, the MOE launched the AI Pedagogical Content Knowledge (AIPACK) project in 2023 to systematically integrate related knowledge into teaching and evaluation. The July 30 seminar, held at National Taichung University of Education, drew 200 attendees from 22 city and county education bureaus, 29 universities with teacher education programs and 37 schools where the initiative is being implemented, the ministry said.

According to the MOE, participants at the seminar gained insight into the possibilities available through AI by exploring lesson plans, case studies and discussions. The ministry provided Da-Tung Elementary School in Taichung as an example for its use of generative AI to create animations to raise awareness of animal conservation.

The education ministry also cited the use of generative AI at Jhen Dong Elementary School in western Taiwan’s Yunlin County to provide real-time feedback and boost students’ learning efficiency, the ministry added.

The core concept of the AIPACK is to build a teaching framework for the six major disciplines, namely, art, Chinese, English, mathematics, science and special education, the MOE said, adding that since the program’s launch, a total of 31 teachers have been certified and over 80 workshop sessions have been held.

The ministry pledged to promote AI literacy on campus to enhance Taiwan’s competitiveness in digital learning and smart education. (POC-E)
