MOEA Deputy Minister Ho takes part in APEC meeting

Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs Ho Chin-tsang attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation’s Small and Medium Enterprises Ministerial Meeting Sept. 13 in Pucallpa, Peru, to share Taiwan’s experiences empowering local businesses.

According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the event was chaired by Peruvian Minister of Production Sergio Gonzalez and held to the APEC 2024 theme of “Empower. Include. Grow.”

The deputy minister brought attendees up to speed on how the government helps SMEs comply with carbon reduction regulations and supply chain requirements. He said these measures include consulting on carbon reduction; introducing low-carbon and smart technologies; encouraging replacement of outdated equipment with subsidies or preferential loans; and promoting cooperation between major corporations and innovative startups to seize green opportunities.

During another panel discussion, Ho said the rapid development of artificial intelligence is creating abundant opportunities for SMEs. Government efforts assist domestic firms making the most of AI through measures such as cultivating AI professionals, promoting cooperation with business associations and information service providers to introduce AI technology, and offering projects tailored to address individual firms’ specific needs.

Gonzalez concurred with the deputy minister that innovation can effectively enhance SMES’ green competitiveness, and that it is important to provide a free AI platform for SMEs so that they can respond to the sector’s rapid development. Participating member economies also commended Taiwan for its successful policy measures, according to the ministry.

The MOEA said during his stay in Peru, Ho and his delegation also met with officials from other APEC member economies to exchange policy views on green and digital transformation, and explore ways to cooperate on SME empowerment for inclusive growth. (SFC-E)
