The Ministry of Environment launched the first of a series of forums on climate change Nov. 15, showing government commitment to action to tackle climate change.
Speaking at the first forum’s opening, MOENV Minister Peng Chi-ming said that Taiwan is actively engaged in climate change mitigation measures, as evidenced by the forthcoming implementation of carbon fees in 2025. The minister emphasized the importance of united public and private sector action to effect net-zero transition.
The initial forum in the series was conducted both in-person and online, with discussions centered on three main themes. Speakers on the first theme, climate action, included Japan Climate Initiative Co-Representative Shigeo Kato and dialogue was focused on government sustainability strategy.
The second theme was green finance, which focused on the importance of this aspect to the new COP29 global climate financing goals. Jean Chiu, vice chair of the Financial Supervisory Commission, participated in this discussion. This section also featured Climate Bonds Initiative CEO Sean Kidney; CBI is an international nongovernment organization working to mobilize global capital for climate action.
Discussions on green technology centered on energy technology, policy planning and international net-zero policies. Among other participants were National Climate Change Committee Deputy Convener Tung Tzu-Hsien and Sam Kimmins, director of energy for international non-profit organization, Climate Group.
Another six online bilingual Chinese and English seminars will take place from Nov. 20-22, looking at urban adaptation, disaster response, global cooperation on carbon pricing, circular economy, green growth and net-zero emissions in high technology, the MOENV said. (POC-E)
