The Ministry of Foreign Affairs offered its sincere congratulations Feb. 9 to Japan and Thailand on their successful general elections the previous day.
Led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party won 316 out of 465 seats in the Japanese Diet’s House of Representatives, the highest held by a single party since World War II, while its coalition partner, the Japan Innovation Party, took 36 seats.
According to the MOFA, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung directed the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Japan to convey congratulations to the prime minister, elected lawmakers of the Japan-ROC Diet Members Consultative Council and other friendly electees.
Under the government’s integrated diplomacy policy, Taiwan looks forward to elevating bilateral ties into a comprehensive, complementary partnership to help ensure peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, the ministry said.
Thailand also held its general elections the same day, with the Bhumjaithai Party led by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul winning the largest number of seats at the House of Representatives. It is expected to work with other parties to form a coalition government.
Lin directed the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Thailand to send congratulatory messages to the Thai government and elected legislators on behalf of the government and people of Taiwan.
The ministry said Taiwan and Thailand have long enjoyed close exchanges in culture, education, investment, trade and tourism and in recent years have continued to enhance partnership under the government’s New Southbound Policy.
Building on this existing foundation of constructive collaboration, Taiwan will continue to take a pragmatic approach and uphold the principle of reciprocity in working with the new Thai government and National Assembly, the MOFA said. (SFC-E)
