The Ministry of Foreign Affairs staged the Taiwan Women’s Power and Culture Night at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York March 13 to showcase the country’s achievements in promoting gender equality.
According to the MOFA, the event was part of Taiwan Gender Equality Week, which is being held on the sidelines of the 70th session of the U.N.’s Commission on the Status of Women, and brought together more than 100 officials from allies and like-minded partners, as well as representatives from nongovernmental organizations.
Prominent attendees included Emma Hippolyte, minister for equity, labor, gender and elderly affairs, social justice, and consumer welfare of St. Lucia, and Laverne Bigson-Velox, minister of family, gender affairs, persons with disabilities, occupational safety and labor of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
During his opening remarks, New York TECO head Tom Chih-chiang Lee said Taiwan has achieved great success in promoting gender equality. Citing the U.N. secretary-general’s message from International Women’s Day that women hold just 64 per cent of the legal rights enjoyed by men, Lee said the government is committed to working with partners around the world to bridge this gap.
In a prerecorded video, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim said Taiwan was ranked sixth globally and first in Asia in the 2025 Social Institution and Gender Index compiled by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. She reiterated that the government will continue to implement regulatory reforms to safeguard human rights.
Hippolyte and Gibson-Velox also shared projects to promote gender equality underway by their respective governments and thanked Taiwan for assistance with advancing women’s empowerment and other cooperative initiatives, the MOFA said. (SFC-E)
