MOFA lauds success of Taiwan’s UNFCCC participation campaign

HomeUpdatesMOFA lauds success of Taiwan’s UNFCCC participation campaign
The Taiwan delegation achieved great success at promoting the country’s bid to take part in the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change at its 30th Conference of the Parties held Nov. 10-21 in Belém, Brazil, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Nov. 23.

According to the MOFA, the Taiwan delegation was organized by the Ministry of Environment and comprised representatives from the public and private sectors. Embracing the principles of professionalism, pragmatism and contribution to global well-being, the group accomplished all its objectives.

Other than making the case for Taiwan’s UNFCCC participation through speeches or statements, the country’s diplomatic allies sent letters to UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell to voice their support. In response, the MOFA expressed its sincere appreciation for their recognition of Taiwan’s commitment to addressing climate change.

In line with the government’s integrated diplomacy strategy and the policy goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050, the delegation held 35 bilateral meetings with representatives from allies, like-minded partners and international organizations to discuss key issues such as carbon credit cooperation, carbon pricing, climate policymaking and regulation, and energy transition, as well as in-depth discussions with senior representatives from participating countries.

In addition to sideline events organized by Taiwanese NGOs, the delegation helped arrange meetings for them and four allies to publicize the constructive role that local civic groups play in the international climate domain, the ministry said.

The MOFA said these activities were extensively covered by mainstream and new media outlets. Such coverage included 82 news stories about an op-ed by Minister of Environment Peng Chi-ming, interviews with Taiwan representatives stationed abroad and letters to editors from the country’s overseas offices.

The promotional video “Fresh Solutions: Chip In With Taiwan” was viewed more than 2.4 million times, while related social media posts received over 516,000 views, the ministry added. (SFC-E)
