The Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized an Indigenous cultural excursion for recipients of the Taiwan Fellowship and members of the Taiwan Alumni Association Oct. 13 in New Taipei City’s Wulai District, underscoring the government’s dedication to showcasing Taiwan’s cultural diversity and building bonds with academics from around the world.
Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung said during the opening ceremony in Taipei City that the Taiwan Fellowship has benefited more than 1,500 talented individuals since its inception in 2010, while over 3,000 students from allied and friendly nations have studied in Taiwan under the Taiwan Scholarship since 2004. Many have joined the TAA to continue consolidating friendships and supporting Taiwan, he added.
Lin also took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of Indigenous culture in Taiwan, adding that the MOFA is actively involved in global Indigenous affairs.
Yapasuyongʉ Poiconʉ, head of the Council of Indigenous Peoples’ Comprehensive Planning Department, introduced the excursion’s destination, Fushan Village, which is the earliest settlement established by the Indigenous Atayal people in Wulai. He added that the CIP will host the inaugural World Indigenous Traditional Games Dec. 10 in Pingtung County, bringing together athletes from nine countries.
The recipients expressed gratitude for the opportunity to take part in the trip, the MOFA said, citing Mahidol University associate professor Morakot Meyer of Thailand, who noted that Taiwan’s commitment to promoting Indigenous culture aligns with the spirit of the U.N. International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032).
According to the MOFA, the ministry will continue to leverage its integrated diplomacy approach and partner with the CIP to enhance global participation and cultural exchanges for Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples.
The fellowship was established by the MOFA to encourage international experts and academics to explore topics related to Taiwan, cross-strait relations and regional ties at research institutions or universities in Taiwan. The TAA was created in 2010, and a diverse range of events, including briefings and exchange activities, are held by the association each year. (YCH-E)
