MOFA refutes China’s false claim about Taiwan WTO participation

HomeUpdatesMOFA refutes China’s false claim about Taiwan WTO participation
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs March 25 strongly condemned the misleading claim by China regarding Taiwan’s participation in the World Trade Organization.

At a press event March 24, China’s foreign ministry cited the so-called “one China principle” as a political prerequisite for Taiwan’s WTO participation. The MOFA expressed strong condemnation and categorically refuted this blatantly false and distorted narrative.

According to the MOFA, in accordance with Article XII of the Marrakesh Agreement, Taiwan acceded to the WTO as a fully autonomous separate customs territory and enjoys equal and complete rights under the WTO framework. There is no basis for China’s fallacious, unilateral claim, the ministry added.

The ROC (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent country, and neither ROC (Taiwan) nor China is subordinate to the other, the MOFA said. China has never governed Taiwan, and these objective facts are the internationally recognized status quo, it added.

Only the democratically elected government of Taiwan can represent its 23 million people in multilateral organizations and at international events, the ministry reiterated. (SFC-E)
