A statement released by the European External Action Service and a joint statement issued following the third Australia-New Zealand Foreign and Defence Ministerial Consultations voicing support for cross-strait peace and stability are deeply appreciated by Taiwan’s people and government, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In the EEAS statement, released March 25 after the 15th annual consultations on security and defense between the EU and China in Brussels, the EU underlined concerns regarding increasing tensions in Asia and stressed its commitment to promoting security and stability in the region, underlining the importance of adhering to and implementing the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea.

A statement issued March 17 after the ANZMIN 2+2 in Australia’s capital expressed similar viewpoints. Australia and New Zealand reaffirmed the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, opposing any unilateral action to change the status quo and encouraging all parties to engage in dialogue rather than resorting to coercion or force.

In response, the MOFA said as the EU expresses its concerns about the situation in the strait through multiple policy documents and official statements, it demonstrates the importance of joint maintenance of Indo-Pacific peace and stability. Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand value democracy, freedom and the rule of law, the ministry noted, adding that cross-strait and Indo-Pacific stability has become an international consensus.

As a responsible and reliable partner in the region, Taiwan will continue to deepen cooperation with like-minded countries to jointly respond to complex threats such as authoritarian expansion, gray zone harassment and attacks on critical infrastructure, the MOFA said. The ministry added that Taiwan is committed to working with other members of the global community to safeguard the rules-based international order and promote regional peace, stability and prosperity.
