The strong support of the global community for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the International Civil Aviation Organization is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Oct. 14.

According to the MOFA, more than 10,000 political figures, lawmakers and friends of Taiwan from around 100 countries have voiced support for Taiwan since the U.N. specialized agency’s last gathering in 2022.

A delegation led by Lin Jiunn-liang, deputy director general of the Civil Aviation Administration, traveled to Montreal this year to express Taiwan’s commitment to joining the ICAO. During his stay, Lin took part in 27 bilateral meetings with representatives from other countries and civil aviation organizations while holding a livestreamed international press conference at the Canadian Parliament’s National Press Gallery.

Allies Belize, Eswatini, Guatemala, Palau, St. Lucia and Tuvalu, among others, have reaffirmed their position on the matter through methods including spoken remarks and official statements, as well as social media posts. Similar sentiments were expressed by like-minded partners, the MOFA said, citing remarks made by U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy during the assembly.

Support also came from high-level Irish and Swedish officials, and joint statements released after the Australia-U.K. Ministerial Consultations in July and the Japan-U.S.-South Korea Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in September voicing support for Taiwan’s bid, the MOFA said. High-ranking foreign affairs officials from countries such as Belize, St. Lucia, Tuvalu, Canada, France, the U.K. and the U.S. have expressed concerns on China’s unilateral change of M503 flight routes since last February, the ministry noted, adding that legislatures of 20 countries addressed the issue by issuing statements, passing resolutions and sending letters.

Among the promotional campaigns this year, an op-ed by Minister of Transportation and Communications Chen Shih-kai has been reported nearly 161 times by media outlets from 38 countries, the MOFA said, adding that the ministry’s 1,143 social media posts for the campaign garnered 2.27 million views.

The MOFA urged the ICAO to uphold a professional, neutral stance and accept Taiwan’s bid to join its activities, mechanisms and meetings. Only through the participation of all stakeholders can the organization’s principle of safe skies and a sustainable future be achieved, the ministry said. (YCH-E)
