The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed statements by Taiwan’s like-minded partners expressing concern over China’s large-scale joint military exercises around Taiwan Dec. 29.
According to the MOFA, the U.S. State Department, European External Action Service and the foreign ministries of the U.K., France and Germany all issued statements following the development voicing opposition to unilateral actions that increase tensions across the Taiwan Strait and stressing that cross-strait peace and stability are critical to global peace and prosperity.
Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed the same stance in a Dec. 31 statement that called for peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues through dialogue, the ministry added.
The MOFA said similar support was conveyed in statements issued Dec. 31 by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia, Department of National Defense of the Philippines and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, as well as in a social media post by New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Remarks by an official of China’s foreign ministry at a Dec. 31 news conference were solemnly refuted by the MOFA in a Jan. 1 release stating that the ROC (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent country, and that only the people of Taiwan have the right to determine its future.
China’s actions defy the principle of refraining from the threat or use of force set out in the U.N. Charter and constitute unilateral attempt to change the status quo, the MOFA said, calling on the global society to continue supporting Taiwan to safeguard peace, security and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
