The U.S. government’s announcement of the sale of fighter aircraft parts totaling US$330 million to Taiwan is sincerely welcomed, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Nov. 14.
According to the MOFA, this marks the first arms sale under the current Trump administration and underscores Washington’s commitment to enhancing Taiwan’s defensive capabilities and resilience, as enshrined in the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances.
The government also thanks the many high-ranking members of the U.S. administration for emphasizing the importance of upholding peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and opposing unilateral changes to the status quo, it added.
In the face of China’s escalating military provocations and gray zone tactics, Taiwan is firm in its determination to defend itself, and will continue to work with the U.S. and other security partners to safeguard freedom and democracy, as well as peace, stability and prosperity in the strait and the wider region, the MOFA said.
The Presidential Office also issued a statement expressing gratitude to the U.S. government for continuing the policy of normalizing arms sales to Taiwan. Spokesperson Karen Kuo said Taiwan is a crucial link for peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, as well as a responsible member of the global community.
Kuo said that given the increasing severity of regional security challenges, Taiwan will raise defense spending to over three percent of its gross domestic product next year and aims for this figure to reach five percent by 2030. Taiwan will also continue to reform national defense, enhance whole-of-society resilience and maintain peace through strength, she added. (SFC-E)
