HomeUpdatesMOFA welcomes bipartisan US senate resolution supporting Taiwan
The bipartisan resolution by the U.S. Senate commemorating the 30th anniversary of Taiwan’s first presidential election is warmly appreciated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs March 24.

According to the MOFA, the resolution was proposed March 23 by Tammy Duckworth, John Curtis and Tim Kaine, all members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. It also reaffirmed that the Taiwan Relations Act and the Six Assurances remain fundamental elements of U.S. policy toward Taiwan.

The resolution was co-signed by Sens. Ted Cruz, Pete Ricketts, Rick Scott, Jeff Merkley, Chris Van Hollen, Michael Bennet, John Fetterman and Jacky Rosen, the MOFA said, adding that Sens. Jim Risch and Roger Wicker, as well as Ami Bera and Mario Diaz-Balart of the U.S. Congressional Taiwan Caucus, also publicly commended the democratic milestone.

Taiwan has demonstrated the strength of its democratic system through multiple peaceful transfers of political power, and its people have shown resilience and steadfast commitment to democratic values despite ongoing coercion and intimidation from China, setting an example not just for the Pacific region but for the world, the resolution said.

The resolution sees Taiwan’s democracy as a great strategic strength for the free world and a key component for strong and enduring U.S.-Taiwan relations. Taiwan’s democracy and respect for the rule of law contribute to peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region, the resolution said, adding that it is committed to supporting Taiwan’s self-defense and the liberty of its people.

The MOFA said the senate resolution commands special significance and follows a similar congressional resolution proposed on the eve of Taiwan’s 2024 presidential election.

Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung welcomed the resolution and expressed appreciation for the bipartisan support for Taiwan’s freedom, democracy and security. The MOFA will continue to work with the U.S. and global democratic partners to promote regional peace, stability and prosperity, the ministry said. (SFC-E)
