The upcoming visit by a delegation of members of the European Parliament Jan. 4-9, 2026, is sincerely welcomed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the MOFA, the 11-person group of European People’s Party members will be led by Michael Gahler from Germany.
During their stay in Taiwan, the MEPs will receive an audience with President Lai Ching-te and call on the National Security Council and Mainland Affairs Council, as well as the Ministries of Economic Affairs and National Defense.
The delegates will also visit local semiconductor firms and travel to the outlying Kinmen County to better understand the current state of affairs.
Additionally, the MEPs will take part in discussions with representatives of Taiwan’s academic and industrial sectors on countering disinformation, cyberattacks and composite security threats; Taiwan-Europe trade cooperation; and Indo-Pacific and cross-strait affairs.
As chair of the EP-Taiwan Friendship Group and a co-chair of the Formosa Club in Europe since 2019, Gahler is a long-standing supporter of Taiwan, the MOFA said, adding that the MEP has dedicated himself to promoting parliamentary exchanges between the two sides.
The MOFA thanks Gahler for advocating for the passage of a resolution in October 2024 to refute China’s misinterpretation of U.N. Resolution 2758 and condemn its continuous military provocations around Taiwan. The government will continue to work with the EU and other like-minded partners in Europe to strengthen democratic resilience and construct a robust values-based alliance, the ministry added. (SFC-E)
