UpdatesMOI stages conference on national park sustainability in Taipei
The Ministry of the Interior’s National Park Service hosted a conference on sustainable pathways for national parks Aug. 4 in Taipei City, highlighting government commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The event was attended by experts with specializations spanning ecotourism, energy-efficient architecture, smart transportation and sustainable development, as well as representatives of U.K. and U.S. national parks. It focused on the topics of natural carbon sequestration, low-carbon tourism and green living.

Highlights of the conference include a presentation on biodiversity credit standards by Chiou Chyi-rong, retired associate professor at National Taiwan University’s School of Forestry and Resource Conservation, and an overview of the U.S. National Park Service’s climate response strategies by NPS expert Lazaro Perez. Lin Tzu-ping, distinguished professor at National Cheng Kung University’s Department of Architecture in the southern city of Tainan, presented a report on energy-saving practices for buildings, while Dmitry Yumashev, principal consultant at the Lancaster-based Small World Consulting Ltd., shared carbon footprint assessment case studies at U.K. national parks.

MOI Minister Liu Shyh-fang said during her opening remarks that reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 is key to the Executive Yuan’s National Project of Hope. The ministry’s Architecture and Building Research Institute, National Land Management Agency and NPS are all sparing no effort to take concrete actions, she added.

According to Liu, extreme seismic and weather events over the last couple of years have damaged the environment, threatened the stability of ecosystems and put the resilience of land conservation policies to the test. Drawing from experience shared at the conference, the MOI will put forth more sustainable policies while continuing to work with the Ministries of Agriculture, Education and Economic Affairs to strike a balance between ecological conservation and human development, she said.

The MOI additionally announced that Yushan National Park Headquarters in the central county of Nantou received recognition from the ANAB Accreditation Program for Greenhouse Gas Validation/Verification Bodies, certifying the integrity of the agency’s carbon emission estimates. The ministry said that all national park administrations around the country have completed carbon inventory checks. (YCH-E)
